Etchart, Martiniano. - : Open Science Framework, 2021 Abstract: Learning a language takes grit. A study recently came out in the journal Language Teaching Research, in which the authors (Teimouri, Plonsky, & Tabandeh, 2020) gave language learners (of English as a second language) a 20-item grit survey. At Michigan State University, we plan to give MSU Spanish language learners the same survey which we obtained from the original study's authors (this is a replication study) to see if MSU students have grit in the same way. The survey in this study will also be presented as now (during COVID-19) and "then" (pre-COVID-19), asking students to reflect on their learning from last year in the fall. Thus, our hope is to see how COVID-19 may be affecting Spanish language learners' grit—how grit is dynamic and may change due to environmental or contextual changes. This study will be conducted in different Spanish language courses at Michigan State University.
